We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director – JAMA Digital Media Production on our Scientific Publication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

As a Director – JAMA Digital Media Production , you will direct the multimedia program for JAMA and the JAMA Network, supervising a team of video and audio producers and administrators, and collaborating across departments, to ensure that JAMA and JAMA Network videos and podcasts achieve a compelling and creative result that support the messaging and goals of the organization.  Build and execute a strategy for digital media products. Oversee audio and video content development, including production, editing, delivery, dissemination, and discoverability.


Digital Media Strategy and Operations

  • Create and execute data-based strategic planning for efficient and effective development and delivery of weekly audio and video content, and expansion of digital media reach and uptake.
  • Continually develops new ways to innovate approaches for new programs and products that respond to available multimedia metrics.
  • Stimulate and harness creative energies of the digital media team.
  • Develop, plan, and revise digital media products that align with current strategy and data; collaborate with Publishing to develop monetization strategies for multimedia products.
  • Develops plans and strategy for fundraising, sponsorship, and/or grant program development for multimedia products.
  • Responsible for operational policies, procedures, and systems for the creation, review, and approval of all audio and visual material for JAMA and the JAMA Network to ensure accuracy, quality, and highest standards for content, and ensure appropriateness of participants and moderators, according to content subject matter and expertise of participants.
  • Direct the operational activities of the JAMA Digital Media Video team, and JAMA Digital Media Audio team, including ensuring effective, efficient workflows.
  • Ensure adequate resources for JAMA Digital Media Video team, and JAMA Digital Media Audio team, including, but not limited to equipment and subscriptions.
  • Understand and manage metrics for assessment of uptake of audio and video products, including tracking of usage of podcasts, videos, live streams, and other products.

Content Creation and Publication

  • Seek synergy with relevant JAMA teams to develop innovative, impactful multimedia content.
  • Maintain awareness of medical multimedia content trends and activities, especially for competing entities in order to continuously refine value proposition and maintain competitive advantage.
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Editor Multimedia to oversee multimedia content development, including planning, creating, recording, reviewing, editing, and producing, as well as publishing and distributing multimedia content.
  • Collaborate with Editorial Team including associate editors, Medical News & Perspectives team in developing, recording, reviewing, and producing content.
  • Oversee publication of audio and video across all platforms, optimizing technical interfaces, internal workflow, user experience, and discoverability.

Staff Management & Department Budgets

  • Serve as an ambassador for JAMA multimedia team within and beyond JAMA, as directed.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for professional staff.
  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating performance, and developing staff.
  • Responsible for formulating and tracking to team’s annual budget including purchasing, asset management/storage, and equipment maintenance.

Job Requirements


  1. Bachelor’s degree in media arts, communication arts, or similar required with additional experience in digital media technology and production is required.
  2. Minimum 10 years experience in video and audio production required, including videos, live streams, podcasts, and expertise in audio and video hardware and software products.
  3. Minimum 5 years in staff management, including sourcing, selecting, developing, coaching, rewarding, recognizing, and optimizing talent required.
  4. Track record of creating an atmosphere and culture that fosters creativity, collegiality, inclusivity, and productivity desired.
  5. Proven experience in Adobe Premiere; experience in After Effects, Media Encoder and Audition required.
  6. Strategic and conceptual thinking skills with ability to develop and execute creative ideas in effective digital content areas (video, animation, and audio).
  7. Outstanding interpersonal skills and track record of working collaboratively in a complex environment; ability to work effectively with internal staff and external participants in video and audio programs.
  8. Experience with management of social media platforms and with tracking programs for monitoring digital media uptake and usage desired.
  9. Experience in selecting and managing vendors required.
  10. Familiarity with medical journal editorial design, publishing process and experience working in the publishing industry preferred
